Finding My Stride: How the Starting Line Scholarship Changed My Life

“When I first heard about the Starting Line Scholarship, I was in a dark place. My anxiety and depression felt overwhelming, and I was searching for something—anything—that might help me move forward. One day, I saw a segment about the program on the local news. It sparked my curiosity, and a small voice in my head whispered, Why not give it a try? “

For one former Starting Line Scholarship Participant, Michele, applying for the program was the starting point to help her believe in herself again.

“Before the program, I was not a runner. In fact, I couldn’t run 50 feet without stopping.”

The thought of lacing up her shoes and going for a jog felt impossible. But the Starting Line Scholarship offered more than just the idea of running—it offered tools, support, and a community that empowered her to move forward and find her personal stride.

From the very beginning, the program gave Michele exactly what she needed to start: quality running shoes and gear, a personalized coaching plan, mental health support from The Well Being, and, most importantly, a peer community that showed up for her every step of the way. The regular check-ins and encouragement kept her accountable, and the friendships she formed reminded her that she was never alone in her struggles.

The most meaningful part of this journey wasn’t just crossing a finish line—it was realizing she could set goals and achieve them.

“That sense of empowerment has carried over into every part of my life. Running became my outlet, my therapy, and my reminder that I’m stronger than I think.”

A Vision for What’s Next

Now, she has made a personal commitment to run at least one race a month. Michele is going into her third year of keeping that promise to herself. For someone who once thought they couldn’t run 50 feet, that’s an accomplishment she will always be proud of.

Why the Starting Line Scholarship Matters

“Having people who understood both the physical and mental battles I was fighting made all the difference.”

If you’re thinking about applying for the Starting Line Scholarship, Michele has one piece of advice: Do it. The program works if you put in the effort. It meets you exactly where you are—physically, mentally, and emotionally—and helps you take the next step forward. “You never know, like me, you might just find your stride in more ways than one.”
